10 Tips for Successful Recycling!
|
1. Use
a Blue Box for recycling.
The
Blue Box is the symbol of recycling in Ontario. It is also the signal for
the driver to stop at your home. If your box has been damaged, lost or stolen,
please contact your municipal office for a replacement. Using a laundry basket,
a five gallon pail or a wooden crate increases the chance of your recyclables
being missed.
2. Have
your Blue Box out by 8 a.m.
Most
weeks the recycling truck stops at your house close to the same time of day.
However, weather, holidays and other factors can affect collection times.
Please have your box out by 8 a.m. This ensures it is ready for pick-up no
matter when the truck arrives.
3.
Place your Blue Box in a visible location.
Long
grass, garbage bags and mailboxes can hide your box. Please place it where
it is visible. If you can see your box when you travel up or down the street
then we can see it too.
4. Do not bag your recyclables
Opening bags slows down our collection. Worst
of all, bagged recyclables sometimes contain garbage such as cigarette ashes,
rotten eggs and even spoiled meat. If bagged please sort items eg: newspapers, plastic, and place with the Blue Box
5. What to
do with extra recyclables.
Following
"What's new in Blue!" will give you more room in your Blue Box.
If you still require more space, put the recyclables you have most of (pop
cans, for example) in an open-topped cardboard box. Place the cardboard box
AND YOUR BLUE BOX out for collection.
6.
Rinse your recyclables.
Sticky
items such as mayonnaise and dog food make recycling difficult. Please do
your best to clean your empty containers. May people put their recyclables
in the bottom rack of their dishwasher. The contianers come out sparkling
with little fuss.
7.
Rinse your Blue Box.
Your
Blue Box can get dirty over time. An occasional blast with a hose will keep
it fresh and clean for everyone.
8.
Empty your Blue Box.
If
the driver leaves an item in your box, it is not accepted in our program.
Please remove left over items before your begin refilling your box.
9.
How to stop your Blue Box from blowing away.
If
high winds or passing cars cause your box to blow away, place a brick in it
before you fill it. Our drivers will put the brick back in the box when it
is empty.
10.
