The Perfect Blue Box!

Thinking "Inside" the Blue Box

Be sure to use the right box

One of the most common problems we run into is that people do not get their recycling picked up because it is not in a proper blue box.

Blue boxes are specially designed to hook onto the side of the recycling truck. This leaves the driver's hands free to do the sorting. If the driver had to hold onto the box with one hand and sort with the other, collection would take twice as long and program costs would increase.

Laundry baskets, cardboard boxes and tote boxes
are some of the most common replacements
that we find people using to set out their recycling.

Sorting It All Out

Well sorted recyclables really help us keep processing costs down.
Here's a guide that can help you to keep your recyclables well-organized.

Flatten and stuff boxboard (no cardboard) into your largest box.
You can include:
  • cereal boxes
  • shoe boxes
  • egg cartons (paper)
  • facial tissue boxes
Put newspapers, flyers, magazines, phone books and catalogues into a paper bag and place it next to your blue box.
Place these items loose in the blue box:
  • aluminum cans
  • tin cans
  • empty aerosol cans
  • empty paint cans (lids off and dry)
  • glass food and beverage containers
  • plastic screw top bottles with numbers 1,2,4,5,7
  • wide mouth plastic tubs with numbers 2,3,4,5,7
